[Netflix Review] Stranger Things Season 3 (2019) ★★★★★

The big epic fight in the Starcourt Mall in Stranger Things season 3

Stranger Things brings more fun, more scares, a bigger monster and is more epic than ever before.

The third season of Stranger Things is bigger, better, funnier, scarier, more epic and more nostalgic than ever. It’s the ultimate adventure into cosmic horror mixed with the ultimate summer vacation vibes in the eighties. This adventure is a perfect combination of humor, excitement, typical eighties adventures, teenage romance, new allies, new characters that going to play an important part and lots of brilliant nods to the eighties. But there are also going to be some tough decisions, moving moments, courage and the ultimate sacrifice. And of course the Mindflayer in his corporal form. This Fourth of July is going to be one to remember.

This third season consists of 8 episodes with each a duration of 49-77 minutes. It has a continuous storyline in which each character plays his/her role, forming new teams to stand up against the evil of the Upside Down.

Plot

In Russia scientists are also working on a device to create a portal to another dimension. They didn’t succeed and in Hawkins Eleven successfully closed the gate to the Upside Down, severing the Mindflayer from the Demodogs who all died. While Joyce successfully exorcised the Mindflayer out of Will’s mind.

Now the evil from the Upside Down is finally defeated, they can go on with their lives. It’s almost the Fourth of July in 1985 and a new mall, Starcourt has been opened. Steve works in an ice cream shop Scoops Ahoy with a new coworker Robin. And the trouble starts when they accidentally intercept a secret message from the Russians. Together with Dustin and Lucas’ younger sister Erica they go out investigating, underneath the mall.

Now that Hopper has full custody over Eleven she can live a normal life and that means Hopper acts as a protective father whenever her new boyfriend Mike comes over. Dustin has been on a science summer camp and now also has a girlfriend. Lucas and Max are going steady. And Eleven and Max have become great friends who go out shopping in the mall.

Nancy and Jonathan both have a summer job at the local newspaper the ‘Hawkins Post’ and Billy is the new lifeguard at the local swimming pool. Everyone has something to do this summer, except Will who feels a bit lonely.

And the Mindflayer isn’t completely gone, while he now has another sleeper agent whom he controls, while he has many others under his mesmerizing spell using them for his gruesome sinister plans. The cosmic horror levels up big time and gets more gory and gruesome than ever, involving the whole town of Hawkins. And on top of that, the Russians are involved too. Can the new and improved teams save Hawkins from the Mindflayer as well from the Russians, before Hawkins is taken over?

Why you should watch it

This third season of Stranger Things is the best adventure yet. The eighties vibe is full on and each character gets a lot of attention to develop and to create a wonderful extraordinary epic story.

The visual style, the mysterious, dark and yet eighties atmosphere, the tension, the horror and the humor are all mixed into an epic and brilliant mixed-tape of the eighties. The structure reminds of a ‘Goonies’ adventure, the whole vibe, clothing, the mall, is spot on eighties, even the movie ‘Back to the Future’ increases the nostalgic feel.

The same structure as used in the previous seasons is repeated. We follow old and newly formed teams who are all on to something adventurous and dangerous and each team holds a piece of the puzzle. When they all finally come together they not only can solve the puzzle but save Hawkins as well.

New this time are the new teams that create a whole new vibe and dynamic which is excellently done. It has that same old familiar feel, but is at the same time completely fresh. Two immensely great additions are Robin and Erica. Two fierce and very smart girls. Erica is just a delight to watch. She’s so sassy and brilliant and a true nerd. The chemistry between this newly formed group consisting of Dustin, Steve, Robin and Erica is the best thing that happened to this season. They are a spin-off on their own, within the big story arc.

Mike and Eleven are in love and nothing else matters anymore. It’s endearing puppy love that makes Hopper angry and feel nauseous at the same time. It’s so funny and we get to see a whole new side of Eleven. Lucas and Max are a real couple too, but not as clingy as Eleven and Mike. Dustin has his own girlfriend too, Suzie, who lives in Salt Lake City and nobody believes she’s real, because he can’t get in touch with her through their homemade radio, Cerebro. But it’s this device that picks up a message from the Russians.

There’s more love that blossoms between Joyce and Hopper and Jonathan and Nancy get serious while they visit Murray Bauman for information, which is a bit awkward and great fun.  While Joyce and Hopper are also on the trail of the Russians and vice versa and end up on Bauman’s doorsteps who helps them infiltrate the Russian base.

So it was going to be a real summer of love, if it weren’t for the Russians who have a secret base underneath the Mall, who’ll do anything to protect it. While the Mindflayer operates on a whole new sinister level, who is cause for great horror that was never more dangerous or scary and gory.  But that means an epic awesome adventure.

The eighties are overly present in the most fantastical ways. They go and see Back to the Future in the movie theater, Dustin and Suzie sing the song of Never Ending Story, which makes it a great trip down memory lane for every child of the eighties. There’s a Russian assassin who reminds of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator. Everything just breaths that typical nostalgic feel of that era, even the new coke formula that only Lucas likes, but everyone else thinks is gross.

This third season does everything right from the eighties throwback, to the cosmic horror, the Goonies vibe adventures, the humor, the characters with their own little storylines, the big story arc, the epic battle between our heroes and the Mindflayer.  It’s going to be an epic awesome rollercoaster adventure.

My favorite part

To hear the song ‘Never Ending Story’ brought by Dustin and Suzie was just brilliant and amazing and it brought back some epic memories. And just like The NeverEnding Story which had its heartbreaking moments full of bravery and adventure, so did Stranger Things feel like this season. I absolute loved everything about it.

But Erica is the best character ever. She’s sassy, smart and a nerd and she’s a great addition to the series and rocks this season. But she couldn’t have done it without Robin. It was brilliant girl power and together with Steve and Dustin they had the most exciting and fun storyline that also was the most important one for the whole plot. It’s a brand new team that worked out perfectly.

The whole season was storytelling at its best. Everything fit together perfectly and felt like a rollercoaster that never lost its momentum and it almost felt like flying.
