[TV Review] Supernatural Season 10 (2014) ★★★★☆

Cass the angel and Dean the demon in Supernatural season 10

Supernatural loses its epic momentum but gains witchy girl power.

The tenth season of Supernatural takes another turn into the expanding and changing universe of Supernatural. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it becomes more epic, fun or exciting. This tenth season is a bit of a mixed bag. With great ideas, new twists and new characters, it doesn’t always prove to turn out great. A lot is going on, but at the same time the series is losing its momentum. In fact maybe too much is going on, which doesn’t always relate to each other, that is feels a little unhinged. It has some great episodes, but the overall story arc stalls the storyline itself.

This tenth season consists of 23 episodes with each a duration of 44 minutes. It has a continuous story arc about freeing Dean of the Mark of Cain and monster-of-the-week episodes.

Plot

Dean has defeated Abaddon by using the Mark of Cain and Cass has successfully opened the gates of Heaven and Metatron is imprisoned. But at some costs. They lost Kevin and Dean has become a demon.

While Crowley aids Dean in finding a way to get rid of the Mark and to make him human again, he is stalling. He likes the new Dean and they are becoming BFF’s. On their search they encounter a very old and powerful witch Rowena McLeod who is also the mother of Crowley. But they also have to deal with a powerful family called Styne, who are in fact descendants of Frankenstein who are in possession of the Book of the Damned which holds all curses and how to lift them.

Sam and Cass are trying desperately to track down Dean before he fully becomes a demon, while Cass doesn’t have his own Grace back yet.

Why you should watch it

Big new show stopper is Rowena. She certainly stirs things up a lot. Although she is Crowley’s mother there’s not much love between them. He hates her and she despises him. But while he is the King of Hell, she becomes the mother who whispers in his ear what to do and how to make Hell great again. That is a very big storyline in this season that feels a bit tedious and which pays a far too big a part.

While it is nice that there’s more girl power in the series, Rowena is sometimes more annoying than a great addition to the series. But her character slowly becomes more fleshed out and important during the season. Although she is the cause that we miss out a lot of witty sarcastic remarks from Crowley, she slowly grows on you and the series. Especially when she has to work with Charlie, the other redheaded girl with sassy powers. Sadly it’s also the last we get to see of her. Like all of Sam and Dean closets friends, Charlie’s demise is not pretty and undeserved.

There’s more girl power, for we get to see Donna Hanscum again who has become an excellent hunter and cop and also Jody Mills is becoming ever more important, while she now also takes in Claire, Cass’/Jim Novak’s daughter. This makes the Supernatural family bigger and a bit more gender diverse.

There are some other newcomers too. Cole Trenton who shows up out of thin air to kill Dean which has something to do with a trivial episode from a few seasons back. And there are the Stynes who play a too big a part, but never become interesting, merely functional.

The big story arc about how to get rid of the Mark of Cain is interesting enough and it ultimately leads to something far more dangerous at the end of the season. In the meantime Sam and Dean are forever struggling to save each other in spite of the fate of the world, which again, leads to an upcoming big evil that is out to destroy the world. This tenth season is a setup for the next season and an introduction of Rowena.

It overall lacks action, epic storylines, the deadpan humor of Cass and the sarcastic humor of Crowley, original twists and the authentic Supernatural vibe.

But this season also does have one of the best monster-of-the-week episodes and a meta-perspective to boot. ‘Fan Fiction’ is one of the best episodes that functions as a small introspective take and recap of the whole series and is wonderfully done.

My favorite part

That would be the episode ‘Fan Fiction’. It was an excellently exciting episode that brought back the familiar feel of the series. It was fun, insightful and campy at the same time.

But Dean being a demon was great fun too. It also showed that Crowley needed a friend and could only obtain one by making him a demon and manipulating him. Crowley is such a tragic figure, being really good at being bad and bad at being good. But now we know why he’s such a cynical demon, he has mommy issues, big time.
